Chrysoprase – The Stone of Summer

Chrysoprase (also chrysophrase) is a gemstone variety of chalcedony (fibrous form of quartz) that contains small quantities of nickel. Its color is normally apple-green, but varies to deep green. It is cryptocrystalline, which means that it is composed of crystals so fine that they cannot be seen as distinct particles under normal magnification. This sets it apart from rock crystal, amethyst, citrine, and the other varieties of crystalline quartz which are basically transparent and formed from easily recognized six-sided crystals. Other members of the cryptocrystalline quartz family include agate, carnelian, and onyx. Unlike many non-transparent members of the quartz family, it is the color of chrysoprase, rather than any pattern of markings, that makes it desirable. The word chrysoprase comes from the Greek chrysos meaning 'gold' and prason, meaning 'leek'.

Due to its comparative scarcity and pleasing green color, chrysoprase is one of the most prized varieties of quartz. Higher quality specimens often rival fine jade, for which it is sometimes mistaken. Cut into cabochons (smooth domed gems with flat backs for use in jewelry), it can be as sought after as fine amethyst. Its use in jewelry dates back to ancient Egypt, where it was fashioned into necklaces, scarabs, and objects of adornment.

Unlike emerald which owes its beautiful green color to the presence of chromium, the color of chrysoprase is due to trace amounts of nickel in the structure. The nickel reportedly occurs as platelets of the talc-like mineral willemseite. Chrysoprase results from the deep weathering or lateritization of nickeliferous serpentinites or other ultramafic ophiolite rocks. In the Australian deposits, chrysoprase occurs as veins and nodules with brown goethite and other iron oxides in the magnesite-rich saprolite below an iron and silica cap.

The best known sources of chrysoprase are Australia, Germany, Poland, Russia, Arizona, California, and Brazil.

Last weekend at the International Gem & Jewelry Show in San Mateo, California, I was able to obtain some choice cabochons and beads from one of my long time vendors who’s family owns and mines Chrysoprase in Brazil. Chrysoprase has recently become an alternative to turquoise and coral, and is a great accent color for summer wardrobes. I will be posting pictures of rings, earrings, and necklaces featuring this unique gemstone as they are finished.

Moonstone – June’s Modern Birthstone

Many legends and myths surround Moonstone. In Ancient times, Moonstone was believed to act as a spiritual link to lunar to the Greek goddesses Selene (Selenology is the study of the geology of the Moon) and Phoebe and their Roman equivalents of Luna and Diana. Moonstone has traditionally been used to enhance psychic abilities and to develop clairvoyance. It was said to arouse passion, bring its wearer good fortune, protect travelers, and calm the emotions.

Moonstone is the opalescent variety of Orthoclase, a common constituent of most granites and other felsic igneous rocks and is often found in huge crystals and masses in pegmatite veins. If not pearly and opalescent, orthoclase is used in the manufacture of porcelain and as an ingredient in scouring powder. It can be commonly found in Sri Lanka, Burma, India, Australia, Madagascar, Tanzania, Brazil, the United States, and the European Alps and comes in a variety of colors including pink, yellow, green, brown, white, cream, and blue.

This necklace incorporates Moonstone nuggets along with Onyx, faceted Citrine, Gold Quartz, faceted Amber, Gold Freshwater Pearls, Swarovski Crystals, and Fine Silver accent beads.

Wire Ring Settings

When creating a ring using faceted gemstones, I use mainly two basic settings - The Cabochon setting for shallow elongated cut stones like this Marquis Citrine and the Prong setting for larger and more deeply cut stones like this Oval Peridot. Both of these rings were crafted using 14k gold filled half hard wire.

PMC and Dichroic Glass

I have been recently experimenting with firing dichroic glass cabochons with PMC Standard. The secret is to gradually ramp up your kiln and hold the temperature at 1650 degrees for at least 20 minutes. Then let the kiln cool naturally (usually overnight) to prevent the glass from cracking. I finished this necklace with a handmade imported silk cord necklace that adjusts from 16 to 20 inches. Please let me know what you think.

Let Your Heart Glow

I wanted to create a unique pendant for Valentine’s Day that would be a conversation starter and fun to wear...especially for all the singles out there. So here it is.

I hand carve each pendant from cast Resin that has been infused with phosphorus to produce the glowing effect. The phosphorescent powder is non-toxic, non-radioactive, and environmentally friendly.

The best way to charge the pendant is to use light sources rich in UV rays such as sunlight, black light, and halogen lamps. Typical household bulbs (Tungsten) take longer to recharge, since their UV output is low. Sun light (5 minutes), UV (Black Light 5 -10 minutes), Normal light (20-30 minutes). The pendant charges indefinitely and has a minimum 10 year shelf life.

Spiral 4 in 1 Chain Maille

The Spiral chain maille weave consists of four jump rings linked into one and is commonly referred to as a 4 in 1. For this particular pattern, I have used approxiamtely 80 18 gauge handmade Sterling Silver jump rings and finished off the bracelet with a crab claw Sterling Silver clasp.

Fused Silver

I created this bracelet by fusing handmade Fine Silver (.999 pure Silver) 16 gauge jump rings with a torch. Each fused jump ring was shaped using a pair of flat nose pliers, work hardened by hammering, and tumbled with stainless steel shot for two hours.

Soon to be released, I will be incorporating this technique into several designs in a new collection especially for Valentine's Day called Promise.

Floating Fushcia

Taking the Persian chain mail weave to the next level, I tried weaving 4mm Fuchsia Swarovski crystals into each link...and Floating Fuchsia is the result. I first made my desired length (18 inches), then inserted a length of Sterling Silver SoftFlex between each link as I strung on each crystal. This necklace uses approximately 200 jumprings and 46 crystals.

Blooms of Citrine

My latest experiment is forming gemstone flowers using wire wrapping techniques. Blooms of Citrine is composed of 6 faceted Citrine briolettes with 6 faceted Garnet centers topped off with 22K Gold Vermeil beads. Each strand features over 50 faceted Garnets with 22K Gold plated seed beads interspersed between each bead. I finished off the necklace with a unique 22K Gold Vermeil leaf clasp. I will be incorporating this flower technique as a focal feature in a few of my Spring 2006 collection that I plan to release in mid February.

European 4 in 1 - Earrings

Commonly referred to as the European 4 in 1 or Traditional Chain Maille (4 rings joined by 1 ring), this weave was traditionally used in European and Middle Eastern armour and jewelry. These earrings are handcrafted in Sterling Silver 18 gauge wire with faceted Fuchsia Swarovski Crystal.

Chain Maille - An Introduction

I am currently working on a collection of Chain Maille jewelry. Tracing its roots back to 5th century Celts, the French word “maille” meaning mesh is commonly referred to as chainmail, chainmaille, or chain mail. This particular pattern of 6 in 1 (6 rings surrounding 1 center ring) was once worn by Samurai warriors to hold their armor together.

This handcrafted chainmail bracelet is made from 20 gauge Purple electroplate and 16 gauge Sterling Silver rings, with approximately 350 rings total which are all handmade. This bracelet is an absolute joy to wear! Its quite loose weave feels great against the skin.

Cornflakes from the Sea

Goldstone - Winter Wonderland

One of my most recent creations incorporates Goldstone as a focal gem. Some speculate it was discovered by accident when alchemists were trying to create man made gold. Goldstone is created from Aventurine glass with copper oxide added. After heating to a high temperature, the oxide changes into beautiful sparkling gold crystals when cooled.

Goldstone is known as the "Humor" gem and is said to conquer a serious nature.
